My Story before creating Ember & Bloom...

Early Life in Bristol

I grew up in a supportive and nurturing household in Bristol, surrounded by family members who provided consistent encouragement. The formative years of my childhood were defined by the positive environment created by those around me. I attended state schools, received supplementary private tutoring, and proceeded to college—a decision I later regretted as it diverted me from pursuing my desired career path. Further details of my journey are expanded below.

Challenges at School

Although I have always been dedicated to academic achievement, secondary school proved to be particularly challenging due to ongoing mental and physical bullying, primarily related to my voice. These persistent difficulties created a hostile environment, making learning increasingly difficult over a period of five years. When I progressed to college for an electrical apprenticeship, the negative experiences unfortunately continued. After three years, the recurrence of similar challenges compelled me to withdraw from the program during a lesson, despite receiving feedback from teachers affirming my excellent practical performance. My decision to leave remains one of my greatest regrets, especially as I now recognise, with support from mental health resources, how significantly these experiences impacted my well-being. In hindsight, the prolonged exposure to emotional abuse contributed substantially to later difficulties with mental health.

Health

Puberty is a unique experience for everyone, and in 2004, I faced severe health challenges marked by considerable pain. After nine months of medical investigations—during which I continued to attend school and encounter sustained bullying—I was diagnosed with a rare medical condition - 47XXY which for me resulted in delayed puberty, which requires lifelong pharmaceutical treatment.

Information regarding this condition was limited at the time; however, advances in technology and research have since enhanced our understanding. Today, this condition is acknowledged to encompass a magnitude range of associated health issues that may vary in severity, from mild to life-threatening, with risks increasing as I age.

Living with a xxy Condition

As of today I've been diagnosed with 67 health conditions and require considerable amount of medication daily to maintain functionality and try to live a normal life. Upon reflection, it is evident that my previous academic struggles were not just because of delayed puberty, but rather in the side effects of adapting to a condition which effects your life daily, and subsequent a late diagnosis of Autism and ADHD.
My life today is a daily struggle, with severe tremors, joint and muscular pains, and many more symptoms through the combination of all health conditions.

The Impact of Bullying

The long-term consequences of bullying are often not immediately perceptible. For me, these manifested as loss of vocal confidence, leading me to avoid speaking in public. Without seeking assistance or voicing my experiences, I entered a period of significant psychological distress. Social expectations compelled me to mask emotions, presenting a façade of happiness while privately grappling with intrusive thoughts and memories of adversity.

A pivotal moment occurred when a stranger intervened during a critical period. The individual approached me, offering companionship and conversation, or silent support if preferred. While I did not fully comprehend the significance at the time, this act of kindness provided essential emotional support and distraction, ultimately playing a role in saving me from taking myself away from this world.

Mental health for male & female

Discussing mental health remains particularly challenging for men, largely due to prevailing societal attitudes encapsulated by phrases such as ‘man up’ and ‘chin up.’ These expressions reinforce stereotypes that can undermine open dialogue and support. Irrespective of gender, all individuals share fundamental emotional and psychological needs, and equitable treatment and self-care is paramount.

Gender should not affect access to compassion or understanding; unity in humanity is essential for fostering inclusive support.

As for me today, I strive to emulate the positive actions of the gentleman who helped me, aiming to extend support and be present for those around me whenever possible—whether that involves simply listening or offering guidance. While I am known for being straightforward and direct, I am also recognised for my kindness, caring nature, friendliness, and supportive attitude.
